Our Story

We are a ministry in the Waco area designed to reach out to individuals who have special needs and who have parents/family who are having financial difficulty and cannot meet their needs, or for individuals who have been forgotten and left behind in groups homes. Some who are in group homes in our community don't have family that, for various reasons, are able to visit them.

What if someone in your family was a special needs person and you were just finding out about it? What would you do? Wouldn't you want to make sure they are given the care and the love they need from family and friends?

The history behind this effort is a Christmas Story. We saw the need during Christmas of 2014 as we went into several group home facilities in our area to sing them some Christmas carols and take them cookies. We saw how happy it made both them and the staff to see that they were not forgotten, and that someone out there does care about
them. Then we began to learn that many individuals do not get a simple birthday present or cake once a year, and many do not get a Christmas celebration with gifts and all of the joyous things that we take for granted in our world. The clients in group homes also have to purchase their own personal care items like shampoo, bath soaps, etc. Many times
after paying for room & board and personal care items there just isn't enough money left for anything else. Thus we officially formed & organized an administrative board, and founded For Jonathan's Sake Ministries to try to fill those needs.

The president of the board is Richard Ogles, who is the senior pastor at The Olive Branch Christian Fellowship, a non-denominational church located at the corner of 11th & Columbus Ave in Waco, TX. The church was established over 10 years ago, and FJSM will be housed in that location and will be going under the church's non-profit exemption at this time.

In 2015 we began to work with Mosaic for birthdays and Christmas. We will expand as funding becomes available. We hope that one day this will not only be state wide in Texas, but eventually a ministry that will be nation wide, helping to give these individuals a small sense of normalcy in their lives.

We know now there is a calling here for all of us who are well and able to come to their aid for necessities, fun, and practical items that provide joy and motivation. How did we come about the name for this ministry?

The answer to that is found in 2 Samuel chapter 4, verse 4,  and 2 Samuel chapter 9. Saul was Israel's first King, Jonathan was Saul's son. David (of David and Goliath) and Jonathan were best of friends who fought together in the Israelite Army. Upon an attack on Jonathan's home, the nursemaid picked up the youngest boy of 5 and ran with him; in her hurry to get away she fell, and the boy was maimed in both feet and became crippled. His name was Mephibosheth. In later years, after both King Saul and Jonathan had met their demise, David became King. He remembered his dear friend Jonathan. 2
Samuel chapter 9 tells of David's kindness to Mephibosheth, the crippled son of Jonathan. So here we are feeling a tug on our hearts from God to show kindness to those who have been...

                 to a place of acknowledgement in society and to have
                 a fundamental share of joy in their lives.
